Kids Hurt Too Hawai'i
Children's feeling does hurt too...
Kids hurt too, a non-profit organization that focuses on improving children's health and behavior by easing the suffering and pain that accompanies parent loss. I started with Kids hurt too when I was awarded a Federal Work Study grant in 2007. Kids hurt too's mission is to strengthen families, bringing them closer together in a time of tragic loss and engaging them in needed community resources. By working at Kids hurt too, I learned how to work with children and help them reduce the stigma associated with parent loss, normalizing their grief and giving them a caring community.
One of my most unforgettable experiences is when one of the children from the foster care group said, “Thanks for understanding me so well.” I learned how to listen to children’s sadness and encourage them to think creatively about life’s difficulties.
This job has given me many opportunities to learn how to manage, develop, and improve programs for children. I have learned how to work with at risk children while maintaining a safe and positive environment. Through trainings and experiences, Kids hurt too has increased my capacity to work whole families and engage them in resources. I had the opportunity to collaborate with other organizations to create mentoring resources for children at risk. I have worked with some very difficult children, gaining skills in behavior management. I want to continue to be helpful, supportive, and encouraging to children. This has become the biggest mission of my life.
